My First & 20
If you haven’t already seen it, First & 20 is a website that serves as a collection of iPhone home screens of some of the coolest designers developers and tech writers.
Each submission contains insight on what Apps that they use and how they use them and offers a glimpse on how each person gets things done on their iPhone.
Here is my unofficial First & 20 submission:
The App Rundown
First Row: Must Haves
Things - Things is my daily project manager. I get lots of emails at work regarding changes to our website so I just drag and drop them into here and tackle them in order of importance.
Mail - I only have my mobile me account set up with this App. Mainly just used to check my mail when I’m out and about or while lazying it at home.
Safari - I use this a lot when I’m on the bus, shuttle or on the Metro train. I have it synced with my computer via Mobile Me so all of my favorites are easy to get to. I love it.
iDisk - I dump important files here that I might want to access while on the road. I keep things like bus time tables, resumes and serial codes here as well as in my Yojimbo on my desktop.
Second Row: Social Networking
Facebook - Pretty self explanatory
Flickr - Though I don’t upload a lot of photographs myself, I love looking at photography and I browse images while on the bus, shuttle or just have time to kill.
Birdfeed - This is my backup twitter client, I was having issues uploading images in Tweetie so I turned to the next best thing to help me with that and ever since I’ve kept it here. When I’m feeling really fancy I’ll tweet from here.
Tumblr - Though I don’t write many posts into here directly, I do check out what other people are posting and post pictures here frequently. It’s another great tool for killing time.
Third Row: Miscellaneous
Simplenote - I take notes a lot while reading or while working and everything that is in my Yojimbo gets copied here so I can access it on the run.
Birdbrain - I do all of my blocking and adding through this App. I hate how many clicks it takes in flicker to block people so I just settle in at night and edit before I go to bed.
Ninjawords - Since I do a lot of reading I like to keep this on hand in case I run into a word that I’m not too sure about. I also like to hit the random word generator and favorite words that I’d want to include into my vocabulary. Learning is fun.
BeejiveIM When I really need to talk to someone online and I’m not near a computer Beejive here to help me with my instant messaging needs.
Fourth Row: The Essentials
iPod - Music, Audiobooks and Podcasts are what I generally listen to in the morning to get me pumped and ready for work.
Net News Wire - RSS to get the gist of everything that has been updated. Once I find something that is worthy of reading I check it out in Safari.
Camera - When something happens and I want to snap it it’s in easy reach. There is some science behind this though. Since I’m left handed I usually have the phone in my left hand. I have the camera App where it is because it’s where my thumb falls naturally when I cradle it in my hand. I can quickly launch the App and stabilize it and snap a photo in comfortable way all in one motion.
Settings - I keep this here because I’m always turning my wireless on and off depending where I am. I also feel that it’s a nice to be able to jump into your settings without having to look for them.
The Dock: Taking Care of Business
Phone - Do I need to go into how important this App is? I have it there because I use it a lot.
Tweetie - This is my main Twitter App. I use it for everything Twitter.
Birdhouse - This is my Twitter notepad. And jokes or random quips I make have more than likely come from here. I love this App to death.
Messages - I text message a lot with my friends and family. So it’s naturally that I’d have this here in the dock.
So there you have it my First & 20. Why should all the cool guys get to have fun? I say flaunt it if you got it
